Time Mastery Now ? Business Productivity On Vacation – Sure It's …
Apparently enough, I stay in a resort metropolis, and snowbirds come right here on vacation. It appears I can barely go to the native Starbucks without meeting somebody I?ve by no means met earlier than, from some exotic and faraway place. Having been to every single city in the United States by way of motor house over a seven yr period, I have been loads of places, nonetheless, each every so often I meet someone from a relatively fascinating place with an attention-grabbing story to tell.
In the last few weeks, I?ve met a number of people who were on vacation, but they have been additionally making them a piece vacation, and attempting to get some enterprise associated undertaking achieved of theirs. One individual admitted to me that they did not take another private tech units with them, and even asked me for directions, as a result of that they had left their iPad and sensible phone at home. They only didn?t need anybody to contact them from work, as a result of they had been strategizing and coming up with new ideas and plans to assist in their company. This made it awkward to get around city and find issues, however they stated it was heavenly not having the minute to minute barrage of incessant data stream from work.
They did admit that they were having a challenge because all of their information move had stopped, and now couldn?t imagine how a lot free time they had even after they were intensely working on this particular enterprise venture of theirs. Indeed, I met one other individual, who was on trip, and he did take some of personal tech productivity instruments from work with him, when he tried to get away to work on a venture, but he was flustered and pissed off as a result of folks that he?d been consulting with at work had been asking him what to do, as a result of they had been at a loss whereas he was out of the picture. Such is the problem of administration?
You can hire efficient virtual assistants at Myoutdesk.com.
This individual had told me after I asked him; ?why are you thinking so laborious,? as a result of he regarded perplexed – that the folks at work were launching a new undertaking, and so they had their priorities all messed up, and in the mistaken order. In other words, it might flip right into a catastrophe if he did not assist them fix the problem. Worse, he was on trip, and he was making an attempt to get some work achieved on his own. He simply didn?t have time for this. I mentioned that another individual I might met left all their private tech devices at residence when they went on their productivity work vacation.
He certainly also thought that was a fantastic concept, and wished that he?d finished just that himself. Due to this fact, maybe it?s best to contemplate all this and suppose on it if you?ll want to get out of the office and away to get some strong and productive working and thinking time in on some essential mission you need to complete.

Kate Gordon: Private Sector Leads on Clean Energy
This post was co-authored by Anthony J. Orlando and Kate Gordon
Lately, when we hear bad news about the environment — like the recent EPA study showing America actually increased our greenhouse gas emissions in 2010 after two decades of decline — the reaction in Washington seems to be to throw up our hands. With all the talk in the media and the halls of Congress lately about what can’t be done on energy and climate this year, though, sometimes we forget that in corporate boardrooms at companies all across America, the private sector has been focused on real solutions.
Last week, the Center for American Progress came out with a “solutions menu” of real options for programs and policies at the federal, state, local and private sector levels that can help produce more clean energy and reduce pollution and waste. What comes through in the report is that the private sector is leading the way toward a cleaner energy future. Across the country, companies are setting internal carbon reduction goals, building more efficient factories, putting up wind and solar panels — and asking their suppliers to do the same. These actions, especially when they’re taken by big companies, are literally changing the energy market in America. They’re also making our industries more efficient and more technologically advanced, which is the only way America can compete in a fast-paced global environment.
Covanta Energy, for example, is focusing is on helping other companies turn their trash into energy, through a process called “waste to energy.” With facilities in Philadelphia, Harrisburg, and Lancaster, York and Montgomery counties, Covanta employs more than 300 Pennsylvanians. Nationwide, the company’s 40 facilities employ 3,673 Americans and produce enough energy to power over one million homes, while diverting almost 20 million tons of trash from landfills each year. Two-thirds of those homes are located in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and Connecticut, making Covanta’s affordable power a major part of the region’s renewable energy mix.
For the companies Covanta works with, turning trash into energy isn’t just about good corporate citizenship. Many of these companies do business overseas, including in Europe, where diverting trash from landfills is required by law. Europe cares deeply about trash for a couple reasons: first, landfills in these countries are nearly full, and so there’s an immediate need to find other and better ways to deal with trash. But just as important, Europe has greenhouse gas reduction policies in place that require businesses to reduce municipal waste, which gives off high levels of polluting methane gas when it is not repurposed into new energy sources.
If the U.S. were to follow Europe’s lead and require high levels of recycling and waste to energy recovery, we could reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 650 million metric tons. We’d also promote a whole new business sector in recycling, waste management, and re-use of materials. That’s not nothing. But instead, we have yet to come up with a comprehensive energy strategy that addresses global warming, and our largest export continues to be the trash we ship to China each day.
But all is not lost. As the CAP report points out, even in the absence of U.S. government action, some big companies are starting to take note that they must step up their game in order to do business in a globalized environment where other countries have passed more forward-looking policies. That’s why Siemens, a German company that manufactures a host of energy systems in factories across the U.S., has created an entire internal Sustainability Advisory Board that incorporates carbon-emission reductions into every business decision the company makes. It’s why Wal-Mart, the country’s single largest private employer, has made a commitment to energy efficiency in its stores and across its supply chain.
These business decisions make good economic sense, and they also set a standard for other companies. With luck, they will set a standard for the U.S. government as well. For without a comprehensive national strategy on energy, it will be hard for any but the largest multinational companies to take serious action to reduce emissions and become more sustainable.
Anthony J. Orlando is President and CEO of Covanta Energy. Kate Gordon is Vice President for Energy Policy at the Center for American Progress.

A Giant Doing: Ideas Here and Everywhere: Producing All that I Want
It’s strange to think that much of my mental health self-improvement ventures this year are set at recapturing old traits I had once already possessed — and lost to a difficult time — which makes me feel like I’m traversing old grounds. But it is true.
Lately I’ve noticed that I’m beginning to recapture the old trait of having a mental pour spout of ideas. Probably due to the Mental Missions, increased productivity, and use of a voice recorder I have been having more and more “worthwhile” and recordable thoughts, often in overwhelming amounts. It’s like finding a tree with more fruit than you could possible eat, which simply won’t cease falling from the branches in perfect ripeness.
I know I can’t rationally expect all these ideas to remain worthwhile and good in the long-run, or to have time to possibly address them all, but I do want to increase my ability to do so. Interestingly, my desire to act on my greatest number of thoughts lies in the realm of writing and reading. I hate discarding old writing topic ideas just because they grow too old, or maintaining a book list that barely gets nicked at. I can make peace with all the other thoughts and plans I may have to let good, but the writing and reading really bugs me.
Even as I strive to become a chef I’ll probably always view myself as a writer. I wouldn’t be surprised it I wrote some books on food or another. And as someone who deeply, deeply values intelligence I will always view myself as a lover of intellectual and good books. In my mind’s eye, among other things, part of the vision of my ideal self includes a man who prodigiously produces writing and absorbs endless books. My time commitments will certainly determine how much of it all that I can actually accomplish, but I want to be doing a hell of a lot more of these two things than I’m doing now, even as much as I’m doing them now. I fantasize about myself actually being able to write upon each and every topic that enters into my desires, and blowing through large books in 2-3 days while retaining a deep comprehension of it.
How much of this aim is realistic and possible is beyond me, but some or a lot of it is possible, I know. For certain, I could definitely be making huge improvements in my efficiency and effectiveness in my current habits. But how?
The writing habit itself is still a little bit of a question, but I can at least figure out two methods for increasing my time and reading efficiency: Waking up earlier and speed-reading. Waking up earlier will give me more time in the day to do stuff, and speed-reading will enable me to get more done by increasing my reading rate.
The waking up earlier thing is a little tricky, because I want to do so naturally and without an alarm. In short, I want to enhance my sleep to the point that, with little to no external aid (such as a supplement), I can fall asleep easily, get effective sleep in a shorter period, and then wake up feeling refreshed. When I was very strict on the Paleo diet, in fact, was a time in which my sleep was outrageously good night after night: I fell asleep very quickly, slept very quickly, and woke up feeling great on a regular basis. The whole matter was that my habits were very rational. I ate a wise and healthy diet, and conducted a generally good lifestyle, not eating before bed or anything. Given that I don’t have any health maladies, for me I think sleep is a skill to master.
I’ve deviated from the Paleo path a little too much. I’ve been eating too much chocolate, eating before bedtime, and not fasting enough. Such is enough, I think, to screw up my body’s rhythm. As such, I’ve been having a hard time falling asleep and wake up feeling very groggy, in one of those states where you feel like you could go back to sleep but your body won’t let you. So I think the solution is simple: Be more Paleo, fast regularly for the positive hormone functions, and don’t eat before bed. Oh, and take more ice baths. They might sound horrendous to you, but I’ve been marveling at how they improve my sense of well-being and sleep, so I ought to be taking them more regularly. A few days of these guidelines and I should be right at rain.
Now speed-reading may sound foolish in that one may think I will be forgoing comprehension to get a speed-boost, sounding irrational, but I think there are some valid, though limited, methods in which one can improve reading-speed without giving up the all important comprehension and memorization. For one, easy: Be selective and don’t read everything, maybe even forgoing whole parts of books. It’s obvious how your time will be better and more efficiently spent if you read only what’s of value to you. Second, another technique to speed-run is to simply boost how fast you read, just up until that point you notice you’re just barely keeping cognitively track of what’s being said (but still being aware of the information). Most of us probably don’t read as fast as we actually can while still being involved in the information, so one of the simplest techniques is to simply push to perform at one’s limit. Com’on: You’re not really reading at your speed potential, are you? Lastly, try using your finger to trace along the text as you read to give your eyes a focal point, which will eliminate time-wasting eye movements. As I’ve read, our eyes hardly read with perfect straightness, and this can be confirmed by noticing the little jolts of movement your eyes make when you try to read without aid. With the finger tracing, your eyes will feel much more still, since they have the fingertip to hone in on.
But as far as speed-reading goes, I think these may be the only legitimately good methods. Other methods, such as silencing the inner voice that dictates the reading while you do it or grouping words together, seem like recipes for lessened comprehension. I can’t possibly see how a person will still be able to fully understand a sentence if he doesn’t internally vocalize the concepts and groups them together in a chunk. The methods described above are aimed at training speed while retaining understanding, so I suggest just using them and allowing their continued practice to boost your speed more and more.
The lingering question is how I could actually modify my writing habits so as to be able to write on all those topics that I want to. For right now my blogging aims are to write one article per day — work and time permitting — in the morning. If I’m only writing one article per day, then how does one fit everything else in? How can I include more spontaneously writing? Needs more thinking.
For now, I’ll work on my sleep and speed-reading. Once I master sleep I’ll not only have much more time at my hands, but also be a much more effective person since the best sleep is also healthful: I’d be sleeping more shortly because I’m getting the healthful properties much quicker and more effectively. And with speed-reading I only need to continue practicing these mentioned techniques, so as to train my speed to greater and greater heights.
Sooner or later I should then be able to go from an idea-spout to a producing machine.? ? ?

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) ? Authorities ordered mandatory evacuations Thursday of dozens of homes close to a wildfire blazing near a scenic canyon in northern Colorado, even going door to door to warn residents of impending danger.
Residents of 80 homes in the area a short drive from Fort Collins had been instructed previously to be ready to leave on short notice, said U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Kristy Wumkes.
The fire has grown from 1.5 square miles to 8 square miles since Wednesday as erratic wind gusts kicked up by dry thunderstorms swept through the region at up to 50 mph.
About 400 firefighters are working to contain the blaze. Their efforts are being supported by a heavy air tanker and helicopters that together are capable of dropping thousands of gallons of fire retardant and water on the flames.
Officials think human activity started the blaze, which was first reported Monday, but are still investigating.
The growing northern Colorado fire was one of several burning in the West on Thursday.
A fire in northern Arizona grew to more than 10 square miles and led to the evacuation of a historic mining town.
Forest Service spokeswoman Michelle Fidler said gusts of up to 40 mph are expected in the Prescott National Forest, near the mountain community of Crown King, about 85 miles north of Phoenix. Most of its 350 residents had already evacuated.
Fidler said that as wind pushed the fire north, crews focused on slowing the blaze from the west, where communication towers are threatened.
The fire prompted an evacuation order Sunday and has destroyed three homes and a trailer. The blaze started at a home, but investigators are still working to determine the cause.
Other fires dotted the state but did not threaten any structures, authorities said.
Meanwhile, separate blazes in northern and southern New Mexico have cast a haze of smoke over the state but have not caused property damage or prompted evacuations, authorities say.
The Colorado fire 20 miles northwest of Fort Collins is scorching a drought-stricken area of steep, rocky terrain dotted by dry ponderosa pine trees, grass and shrubs. The region north of the Cache La Poudre River is popular with hikers and rock climbers.
A thick smoky cloud over Fort Collins prompting health officials to warn that children and people with lung or heart problems should stay indoors.
The haze extended 65 miles south to Denver prompting concerns that it would affect planes at Denver International Airport, but officials there said operations had not been affected.
A human-caused fire near Fort Collins in April 2011 scorched 5 square miles, destroyed 13 homes and temporarily displaced residents from 335 homes.
Though the evacuation is mandatory, officials are not authorized to forcibly remove anyone from their homes.
Area resident John Hasler said he’s not leaving.
“We’re not going to have a fire come down and burn our house,” Hasler said, adding that his home is surrounded by a lawn of closely cropped grass. “If does, it’ll burn grass and it wouldn’t be big flames. I’m really confident that I can handle it with my garden hose.”
Hasler said “it’s a totally different situation” from the late March wildfire that killed three people south of Denver.
This blaze is the first wildfire to prompt evacuations in the state since those deaths.
“If my home was in the timber, I’d be really worried.”

Companies ask: Does advertising on Facebook pay?

Insiders and early Facebook investors are taking advantage of increasing investor demand and selling more of their stock in the company?s IPO, which is set for Thursday, May 17, 2012. But plans for the IPO were unfolding amid a debate over the effectiveness of Facebook advertising. (AP Photo/Mark Lennihan, File)
NEW YORK (AP) ? Responding to extraordinary demand, Facebook said Wednesday that it would sell more stock in the company’s initial public offering. But ahead of the IPO, a debate emerged between two of the nation’s largest automakers: Does it pay to advertise on the social network?
General Motors, the nation’s largest automaker, said it would abandon Facebook ads after concluding they were ineffective. At the same time, Ford reaffirmed its commitment to Facebook, saying their relationship was stronger than ever.
The direct financial impact of GM’s move is minimal for Facebook, but the decision drew attention to the network’s advertising system, which some observers regard as immature.
In a regulatory filing Wednesday, Facebook said it would add 84 million shares, worth up to $3.2 billion, to the IPO, which is shaping up to be the decade’s hottest. The company’s stock is expected to begin trading Friday on the Nasdaq Stock Market under the ticker symbol “FB”.
Almost half of the additional shares come from investment firms DST Global and Tiger Global. Goldman Sachs is doubling the number of shares it is selling. Facebook board members Peter Thiel and James Breyer are also selling more shares.
Since all of the additional shares come from insiders and early investors, the company won’t benefit from their sale.
“It certainly does raise the question: How much higher could the stock go if institutions who know the company well think this is a good price to sell?” said Daniel Ernst, an analyst with Hudson Square Research.
On the other hand, he said, investment firms only make money by selling their stakes, and they have bills to pay. So the fact that they are selling more is only a limited indication of their confidence in the company.
The news comes a day after Facebook raised the expected price of the stock to a range of $34 to $38 per share, up from its previous range of $28 to $35.
At the high end of the price range, the IPO would raise $16 billion, without the overallotment option reserved to meet extra demand. That would make it the third-largest IPO in American history, ahead of General Motors in 2010, according to Renaissance Capital.
The IPO would value Facebook at more than $100 billion. The stock is expected to get a final price Thursday evening.
In papers filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Facebook said current shareholders are now offering approximately 241 million shares, up from about 157 million shares previously.
Even though founder Mark Zuckerberg is not increasing the number of shares he is selling, the additional sales will trim his voting control to 55.8 percent from 57.3 percent. That’s because he has voting control over some of the shares owned by investment firms.
The market expects a substantial IPO “pop,” or first-day price jump, said Josef Schuster, founder of IPO investment and tracking firm IPOX Schuster. But the overall stock market has been down in the last two weeks, and investor interest could flag quickly, he said.
“It may be rough waters for Facebook in the next few days, given that pricing has been up and up in a market that’s been down and down,” he said.
Facebook has more than 900 million users who log in at least once a month, but it makes only a few dollars per year from each one, chiefly through advertising. Advertisers have been complaining that it’s difficult to make good use of Facebook.
A person briefed on GM’s advertising said the company will stop running paid advertising on Facebook by mid-summer because advertising agencies and third-party companies that reviewed the ads determined the company wasn’t getting much back for its $10 million annual investment.
The person, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because GM’s ad strategy is private, said the Facebook ads did not entice consumers to consider GM products.
GM will, however, maintain Facebook pages for all of its brands and models. Those pages are popular and do attract customers to products, the person said. But they don’t make money for Facebook.
GM spends about $30 million a year creating content such as pictures and videos to post on the pages, the person said.
More than 3.1 million people on Facebook “like” two pages dedicated to the Camaro muscle car, and 1.2 million “like” the Chevrolet brand. GM also has brand pages for individual countries.
GM said that it constantly reviews whether its advertising in all media reaches the right age and income demographics. It could reconsider Facebook ads later in the year, the person said.
GM’s advertising spending is a tiny fraction of Facebook’s total 2011 advertising revenue of $3.15 billion. But the automaker’s decision could be symptomatic of Facebook’s weak appeal to advertisers.
The social network’s chief moneymakers are so-called “display ads” ? boxes that show up on the right side of Facebook’s page. They’re tuned to users’ interests and activities, but they don’t connect as well as Google Inc.’s search-based ads.
The problem may not be just Facebook’s. The advertising world is set up to take advantage of one-way media like magazines and TV, not two-way channels like Facebook, and may need some time to adjust.
Ford Motor Co. is taking the opposite tack of GM. It’s set to increase spending on Facebook advertising this year, said Scott Monty, Ford’s global head of social media. Ford sees the site as a way to build long-term relationships with customers, not just as an online billboard.
Ford complements display ads by sponsoring stories in the news feeds of people who subscribe to its pages. People see them in the area where their attention is focused, rather than in the right-hand column, Monty said.
It also buys ads that appear when a person logs out of Facebook, with images and descriptions of products such as the Ford Mustang, he said. He wouldn’t say how much the carmaker spends with Facebook.
The value of Facebook ads, Monty said, can’t be measured simply by the number of clicks they get from viewers.
“It’s a holistic kind of a relationship thing rather than a single transaction we’re looking for,” he said.
